How to Tell If a Dog Supplement Is Safe: FDA, GMP, and Ingredient Sourcing Explained
What 'Manufactured in an FDA-Registered Facility' Really Means for Your Dog's Supplement
When it comes to joint supplements for dogs, the truth is—most people don’t know what they’re actually getting. Labels can be vague, standards vary widely, and there’s little oversight in the pet supplement industry.
That’s why where and how your supplement is made matters.
At The Big Damn Dog Co., our product is manufactured in the USA in an FDA-registered facility that adheres to Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP). But what does that actually mean for you and your dog?
Let’s break it down.
FDA-Registered Facility: What It Really Means
While the FDA doesn’t approve dietary supplements (for humans or pets), it does oversee the facilities that manufacture them. An FDA-registered facility is one that has officially registered with the Food and Drug Administration and is subject to routine inspections.
This registration means:
- The facility is held to high cleanliness and safety standards
- There are protocols in place to prevent contamination
- Products are traceable and accountable from raw material to finished good
For your dog, that means what’s on the label is what’s actually in the bottle.
What Are Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP)?
GMP refers to a set of standards that ensure supplements are made consistently and safely. This includes everything from employee hygiene and equipment maintenance to ingredient sourcing and packaging.
Facilities that follow GMP:
- Test raw materials for purity and potency
- Prevent cross-contamination between products
- Use documented procedures to ensure batch consistency
When you’re giving a joint supplement to a 120-pound dog, this kind of consistency is critical. Under-dosed or inconsistent formulas just don’t cut it.
Made in the USA: Why It’s Worth Noting
Domestic manufacturing means stricter oversight, better documentation, and higher quality assurance. Our product is manufactured right here in the United States, which gives us more transparency and control over the process.
It also means shorter supply chains, fresher ingredients, and better communication with our partners. And for you? More peace of mind.
Globally Sourced, Selectively Chosen Ingredients
Not every high-quality ingredient can be found in the U.S.—and we won’t compromise effectiveness just to slap a “100% U.S. ingredients” label on the bottle.
We use globally sourced, selectively chosen ingredients backed by science and recommended by veterinary experts. Each one is chosen for potency, purity, and impact.
And yes, they’re all tested before they ever make it into your dog’s chew.
Certificate of Analysis (COA): Every Batch Verified
Every batch of our supplement comes with a Certificate of Analysis (COA)—a document that verifies it was tested for purity, potency, and contaminants.
This means:
- You know exactly what’s in your dog’s supplement
- Each ingredient meets quality and safety standards
- There’s documentation to back it all up
In a space with little regulation, a COA is one of the strongest signals of a company that takes quality seriously.
Why This Matters for Giant Breed Dogs
When you’re caring for a dog that weighs more than some adult humans, cutting corners isn’t an option. Low-quality supplements can lead to wasted money at best—or dangerous health consequences at worst.
We built this product for our own Great Dane, Lucy. That meant it had to meet our standards as both pet parents and professionals. Every step of our process reflects that commitment.
The Bottom Line
The supplement industry may not be regulated—but we are.
Our joint supplement is manufactured in a U.S.-based, FDA-registered facility that follows GMP standards, using premium ingredients from trusted global suppliers. Every batch is verified with a COA to ensure what’s on the label is what’s in the bottle.
Because your big dog deserves a product made with integrity—not shortcuts.

My large breed is on Flexadin Advanced and I am seeing some improvement after a couple of months. How does your product compare to what I’m using now? And how long does it take to see improvement? Thank you.

Hi Nick! Thanks so much for reading—and great question.First, we’d love to learn a little more about your pup—how much does your dog weigh? That can really influence how effective a supplement is, especially for big dogs who often need higher potencies to truly make a difference.
Flexadin Advanced includes UC-II collagen, which can be a great ingredient. Our approach is a bit different—we built our formula specifically for dogs over 100 pounds and included 11 active ingredients to target joint care from multiple angles: joint building blocks (like glucosamine, chondroitin, MSM) and natural anti-inflammatories (turmeric, boswellia, etc.). All dosed to ensure it’s actually effective for big dogs.
Many of our customers start noticing improvements within the first 30 days, though the full benefits typically show up around 60–90 days—especially if their dog already has visible stiffness or discomfort.
Let us know more about your dog and we’re happy to talk through whether our supplement might be a good fit!
