The Diet Spectrum: What the Research Actually Shows for Giant Breeds (Part 3 of 4)

There are five main ways people feed dogs today: extruded kibble, baked kibble, fresh or gently cooked food, raw diets, homemade whole food, and freeze-dried or air-dried food. Each has a community of passionate advocates. Each has real tradeoffs. And for giant breed owners, some of those tradeoffs carry more weight than they do for the average dog.
This article covers all five honestly — what the research supports, where the evidence is thin, and what specifically matters when you're feeding a dog that might top 150 lbs and whose developmental and health vulnerabilities are different from a 40 lb mix.
One thing before we start: no single diet type is right for every dog or every owner. The goal here isn't to declare a winner. It's to give you an accurate picture so you can make the best choice for your specific situation.
Extruded Kibble
Extruded kibble is what most people picture when they think "dog food" — the small, shelf-stable nuggets that have dominated pet food for decades. It's made by mixing ingredients into a wet dough, forcing it through an extruder under high pressure, cooking it at temperatures typically between 130–160°C (266–320°F), then air-popping it into its final shape. The finished product is then sprayed with fats and flavor enhancers, and vitamins and minerals are added back in to replace what processing degraded.
What the research shows
The high-heat, high-pressure extrusion process has real consequences for nutritional value. A 2021 study published in Translational Animal Science (Oxford Academic) found that fresh food diets had significantly higher apparent digestibility of dry matter, protein, fat, and calories compared to nutritionally comparable extruded kibble — across all four fresh diet protein sources tested. Dogs on the fresh diet also defecated less frequently and produced significantly less fecal matter, indicating their bodies were absorbing more of what they consumed.
The extrusion process also produces acrylamide — a chemical compound formed when carbohydrates are exposed to high heat. A 2021 study found that dogs eating dry extruded kibble had daily acrylamide intake approximately four times higher than the average daily human exposure. Acrylamide is classified as a probable human carcinogen; its direct effects in dogs are not yet fully established, but the exposure difference is notable and is an active area of research.
Protein digestibility in extruded kibble can range from 64% to 91% depending on ingredients and processing — a wide range that the "complete and balanced" label doesn't distinguish between.
The honest tradeoffs
Kibble is convenient, shelf-stable, affordable, and widely available. Many dogs live long, healthy lives on it. But the label says little about where on that 64–91% digestibility range a given food falls, or what ingredient quality actually looks like behind the formulation.
For giant breeds specifically, feeding extruded kibble from a manufacturer that meets the WSAVA standards — full-time veterinary nutritionist on staff, published feeding trials, quality control testing — is a meaningfully different proposition than feeding a kibble that just cleared the AAFCO minimum threshold.
What to look for
- The AAFCO feeding trial statement (not just "formulated to meet")
- A named whole protein source as the first ingredient ("chicken," not "chicken by-product meal")
- A formula designed specifically for large or giant breed puppies during the growth phase
- A manufacturer willing to answer the WSAVA questions clearly
Baked Kibble
Baked kibble uses a fundamentally different manufacturing process. Rather than extrusion under high heat and pressure, ingredients are formed and oven-baked at lower temperatures over a longer period — closer to the way food is prepared in a conventional oven.
What the research shows
The theoretical case for baked kibble is sound: lower processing temperatures should preserve more heat-sensitive vitamins, retain more of the protein's natural structure, and produce fewer processing byproducts like acrylamide. Some research on starch behavior and protein denaturation supports these principles.
The honest caveat: independent peer-reviewed research comparing baked to extruded kibble in live dogs is limited as of 2026. Much of the comparative data comes from manufacturer-funded studies or theoretical food science rather than controlled digestibility trials. The principles are plausible; the real-world evidence is thinner than baked kibble marketing implies.
The honest tradeoffs
If baked kibble is formulated by a manufacturer meeting rigorous quality standards, it likely offers some nutritional advantages over extruded kibble. But "baked" alone — the word on the bag — is not a sufficient quality signal. A poorly formulated baked kibble using low-quality ingredients is still a poorly formulated food. Fresh / Gently Cooked Food
Fresh dog food — commercially prepared, refrigerated or frozen, made from whole food ingredients cooked at lower temperatures without extrusion — has grown significantly in the last decade.
What the research shows
This category has some of the strongest independent research support of any commercial diet type. The 2021 Translational Animal Science study found fresh diets significantly outperformed extruded kibble on every digestibility measure. Dogs on fresh food had higher protein, fat, and calorie absorption, defecated less, and produced firmer, smaller stools — consistent markers of efficient nutrient utilization.
Commercial fresh foods that carry the AAFCO complete and balanced statement are required to meet the same nutritional standards as any other commercial diet. Those made with human grade ingredients and manufactured in human food-certified facilities also meet the higher sourcing standard described in Part 2.
The honest tradeoffs
Fresh food is more expensive than kibble, requires refrigeration or freezer space, and has shorter shelf life once opened. Caloric density can be higher per gram than kibble, which requires attention for giant breeds where calorie control — especially in the puppy phase — is critical.
Giant breed specific considerations
The digestibility advantage of fresh food is a genuine benefit for giant breeds, particularly seniors whose digestive efficiency naturally declines. The calorie density point is not a reason to avoid fresh food — it's a reason to measure carefully and follow the feeding guidelines for your dog's specific weight and life stage.
Raw Diets (BARF / PMR)
Raw meat-based diets (RMBDs) come in two forms: commercially prepared raw (frozen or freeze-dried) and homemade raw, where owners source and prepare their own ingredients. BARF stands for Biologically Appropriate Raw Food (or Bones and Raw Food); PMR stands for Prey Model Raw.
What the research shows
On nutritional completeness: A 2013 review in the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association found that few raw diet manufacturers conduct AAFCO feeding trials or digestibility studies on finished products, making it difficult to verify that commercial raw diets are truly complete and balanced in practice.
On pathogen risk: A 2022 UK study found antimicrobial-resistant E. coli in 54% of raw-fed dogs tested, compared to 17% of non-raw-fed dogs. Salmonella was detected only in raw-fed dogs. Dogs can carry and shed these pathogens without showing symptoms — meaning the risk extends to the humans and other animals in the household, not just the dog. A 2019 review in the Journal of Small Animal Practice concluded that the prevalence of potentially serious pathogens is substantially higher in raw pet food than in heat-treated food.
On calcium balance in raw diets for giant breeds: This is where raw feeding and giant breed physiology create a particularly significant conflict. The calcium provided by raw meaty bones varies considerably depending on the bone type, the age of the animal, and how much bone is actually consumed. Hitting the narrow calcium target that giant breed puppies require — 0.8–1.2% DM, documented across multiple studies — is extremely difficult to achieve consistently with raw bones. Too little calcium causes pathological fractures. Too much causes the osteochondrosis and developmental orthopedic disease described in Part 1. The margin for error is narrow, and raw feeding does not lend itself to the precision the growth phase requires. The honest tradeoffs
Raw feeding for adult giant breeds, formulated with veterinary nutrition guidance and using high-quality sourced proteins, is a different conversation than raw feeding a giant breed puppy. The risks aren't identical across life stages. But the pathogen reality — for the dog and for the people in the home, especially children, elderly individuals, or immunocompromised household members — deserves honest consideration regardless of age.
If you feed raw, the AVMA and most veterinary nutrition bodies recommend using USDA-inspected proteins, sourcing from manufacturers who conduct quality control testing for pathogens, and handling raw food with the same care you'd give raw meat in your own kitchen.
Homemade Whole Food Diets
The appeal of homemade feeding is easy to understand: you know exactly what's in the food, you control every ingredient, and you can use genuinely high-quality whole foods. The intention is real. The execution, statistically, almost always falls short.
What the research shows
A study from the University of California, Davis analyzed 200 homemade dog food recipes from 34 sources including veterinary textbooks, pet care books, and websites. Only 9 of 200 recipes met minimum AAFCO nutrient standards for adult dogs. Of recipes written by board-certified veterinary nutritionists, all four met acceptable nutrient profiles. Of recipes from general websites, almost none did.
A 2025 study from the Dog Aging Project — analyzing 1,726 homemade diets submitted by owners — found that only 6% of those diets had the potential to be nutritionally complete. The researchers noted that this figure may even be optimistic, since the analysis couldn't account for whether owners measured ingredients precisely.
The most common deficiencies: choline, vitamin D, zinc, vitamin E, calcium, and essential fatty acids. Many of these deficiencies take months or years to manifest clinically — by which time the damage can be significant and, in some cases, irreversible.
The honest tradeoffs
Homemade feeding is not categorically wrong. It is categorically difficult to do correctly without professional guidance. A well-formulated homemade diet, developed by a board-certified veterinary nutritionist and followed precisely, can be excellent.
Giant breed specific considerations
Every concern about homemade diets is amplified for giant breeds. The calcium and phosphorus balance that matters so much — especially during the puppy and adolescent phase — is nearly impossible to hit consistently without professional formulation and precise measurement. If you want to feed homemade, invest in a consultation with a board-certified veterinary nutritionist (find one at dacvn.org) before you start, not after something goes wrong.
Freeze-Dried and Air-Dried Food
Freeze-Dried
Freeze-drying removes moisture through sublimation — the food is frozen, then placed in a vacuum where the ice converts directly to vapor without passing through a liquid state. No heat is applied. The result is a shelf-stable product that retains the nutritional profile of the raw ingredients very close to intact.
Air-Dried
Air-drying uses warm air at low temperatures over an extended period to remove moisture. It's gentler than extrusion but does involve some heat, meaning it achieves lower pathogen risk than raw but also has slightly less nutrient retention than freeze-drying.
What the research shows
Independent research on freeze-dried and air-dried formats specifically is more limited than on kibble or fresh food as of 2026. What is established: the absence of high-heat processing in freeze-drying preserves nutrient integrity better than extrusion, and pathogen testing has generally shown lower contamination rates in freeze-dried products than in raw frozen. A 2024–2025 Consumer Reports test of 58 dog foods found Listeria contamination only in raw frozen products — zero in fresh cooked foods and the freeze-dried products tested.
The honest tradeoffs
Freeze-dried food is expensive — often the most expensive per-calorie option available. For giant breeds eating large volumes, this is a real barrier. Many owners use freeze-dried as a topper over kibble or fresh food rather than as a complete diet, which is a reasonable approach as long as the base diet is itself complete and balanced.
If you use freeze-dried as a complete diet, verify it carries the AAFCO complete and balanced statement for your dog's life stage. A freeze-dried product without that statement is a supplement, not a full diet.
Putting It Together
There is no diet type that is perfect, risk-free, and right for every giant breed dog. What the research does support is a hierarchy of considerations that matters regardless of which format you choose:
Nutritional completeness comes first. A fresh food diet that isn't complete and balanced for your dog's life stage is worse than a well-formulated kibble. The format doesn't override the fundamentals.
Ingredient quality and sourcing matter more than the category. A human grade fresh food and a feed grade kibble made from 4D-sourced meal are not equivalent, even if both carry the "complete and balanced" statement.
Giant breed puppies need a different standard than adult dogs. The calcium and phosphorus precision required during the growth phase narrows the acceptable options considerably. This isn't permanent — adult giant breeds have somewhat more dietary flexibility — but the puppy and adolescent phase is where the stakes are highest and the margin for error is smallest.
Your dog's individual health history matters. A giant breed dog with a diagnosed heart condition, kidney disease, or joint disease may have specific nutritional needs that override general recommendations. These dogs need veterinary nutrition input, not just a label comparison.
